Yahoo picks up Simon Cowell’s DJ competition show, will premiere via Yahoo Screen
In January 2012, former American Idol judge Simon Cowell announced his plans for a new reality tv show: an “X-Factor for DJs,” of sorts. Later that year, the project was scrapped because Cowell and his production company, Syco, fell into disagreement with then-partner Overbrook Entertainment regarding top billing on the show’s credits. Sony Pictures Entertainment, a second collaborator on the show, also dropped the assignment in failing to find a common ground with Cowell.
Just over two years later, Simon found perhaps an even stronger partner to bring his vision to life: SFX Entertainment. In capitalizing on the explosive nature of dance music, the two are readying themselves to premiere what is tentatively titled “Ultimate DJ,” — an American idol-styled show in which contestants will compete to be voted number one. The series will combine pre-recorded and live segments.
Yahoo will officially serve as the show’s distributor, and will air weekly once it premieres on Yahoo Screen. The platform hopes that by moving toward the music world, it will help capture greater audiences and keep a firm grasp on advertisers. While it is unknown how much Yahoo paid for the forthcoming series, the company may have a chance at profiting from Cowell’s work due to reality shows’ lower production costs.
Despite being condemned by Fatboy Slim and Gorgon City, it seems a bit too soon to predict the series’ success or failure. At its best it will inspire a new age of talent and foster a greater understanding of dance music culture, and at its worst it may fuel the money-hungry, superstar-seeking youth looking to become household names.

Club Killers Radio – Best of 2014 (Part 1)
What’s up Club Killers fam! Alex Dreamz here, back on the podcast. 2014 was a huge year for us here on the site, as our Asia director DJ Bento always says “the rep grows bigger”! Adding the likes of legendary mash up master DJ Deville in Shanghai, China to the crew and CK fam David DeLuca (Vinyl Dave) striking a 2 deal with the Atlantis in Dubai, really helped take our international alliance to the next level! Not too mention the huge success of our Calvin Harris “Summer” Festival Trap remix getting over 5 million plays on blogs, Boom Clap Remix, The Weeknd Remix! So much good music!
So much good music it was so hard to compile this best of 2014 mix that I decide to make it in 3 parts. The first part here is filled with more deep house / future house type of tracks that I really loved this year. Next week part 2 will be more focused on trap & twerk. Check out the full track list of part 1 here: Continue reading →

Mixed in Key 7.0 sets Automatic Cue Points for Traktor/Serato
Mixed In Key has announced version 7.0 of their famous key detection software. This time they’ve added a powerful new feature for Traktor and Serato, automatic cue points. Placing cue points in tracks can be a time consuming process. DJ’s have to load all their tracks individually, find suitable spots, then mark each cue point. With the latest update from Mixed In Key, the software will analyze tracks, detect the BPM/Key as usual, and it will set 8 cue points inside of the tracks.
The most impressive part is that it can set cue points for multiple tracks, which will save DJ’s tons of time in preparing tracks. The full details have been released and a video is available on Mixed In Key’s YouTube channel showing the feature in action. It seems to do a fine job of setting cue points at critical parts in the track: intro, breakdown/buildup, chorus.
Mixed In Key has been around since 2006 and for a long time it was the only key detection solution available. Competition has caught up in the last couple years with more software such as Traktor and Rekordbox incorporating key detection as a standard feature and more free software options. DJTT has posted a couple articles comparing the key detection amongst different software, the most recent comparison was in 2014. Mixed In Key has stayed ahead of the competition with new features such as “Energy” detection and an improved key detection algorithm. With this latest release Mixed In Key continues to be ahead of the curve and provide tools that are valuable to DJ’s.
Mixed In Key 7.0 costs $58 for new users who have never purchased a copy before, $29.99 for everyone with a copy of 5.0 or earlier. 6.0 users get a free update to 7.0 – and is available to download now.

Kaskade signs with Warner Bros Music
Warner Bros. Records is staking its claim in the EDM world by signing one of the genre’s biggest players: Kaskade.
After releasing eight albums on independents like Om Records (People Under the Stairs, Bassnectar) and Ultra Records, the 43-year-old DJ (real name: Ryan Raddon) inked a two-album deal with the company in what seems an admission that the surest path to stardom is major-label muscle. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
The decision came down to reach. Says Kaskade: “A lot of majors look at electronic musicians as producers first, and say, ‘We’ve got these topline writers and this act we’re trying to break…’ It seems very formulaic. I don’t need the factory behind me. I just need help getting my music heard.”
For its part, Warner is taking an ambitious step into EDM’s competitive, and increasingly crowded, ring. CEO Cameron Strang characterizes the signing as “a perfect fit” to complement its partnerships with EDM-focused labels Three Six Zero and Parlophone’s FFRR imprint, and an “ever-expanding repertoire” that includes Prodigy, which has a new LP due in 2015.
The timing is right, as Kaskade is about to launch an exclusive residency with Wynn Las Vegas that includes more than 30 shows at Encore Beach Club and the newly redesigned XS Nightclub through January 2017. “The big builds and drops, the super heavy stuff, that’s getting lost,” says XS partner Jesse Waits. “Kaskade has kept his sound’s integrity. There’s longevity here.” While he has never had a radio hit, Kaskade does have three Grammy nominations, along with sellout tours and headlining gigs at major music festivals. It was announced last week that he’ll play Coachella for the fourth time this April. Continue reading →
