EDC 2014 Brought in $338 Million for the Las Vegas Area
The Electric Daisy Carnival juggernaut continues to pay dividends for the Vegas area.
According to a report by Beacon Economics, which is commissioned by EDC producer Insomniac, the three-day festival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and its supplemental events on the Strip generated $337.8 million in Clark County. This eclipses the $278 million reported to have come in from the 2013 edition, and puts Clark County’s four-year EDC haul at $959 million.
Of that $338 million, $257 million stems from attendee expenses, including $30 million for accommodations, $54 million for food and beverage and—surprise—$23.5 million for gaming. Insomniac spent $81 million itself, though that figure doesn’t include DJ programming costs. Tax revenue for Nevada and local governments came in at $20 million.
Beacon’s estimates come from attendee surveys and Insomniac-originated data. Those figures come close to Billboard’s $322 million projection just a week after the June 20-22 fest. Insomniac reported an EDC 2014 sellout at 400,000 attendees for the weekend and plans to release information regarding its 2015 edition on Tuesday.

RiFF RAFF Wants to Be the ‘EDM Justin Bieber’
The eccentric Houston rapper confirms with Billboard that he’ll be joining Golden Hare Management Group, home to rising tropical house artists Kygo and Thomas Jack.
After meeting Kygo, Jack and manager Myles Shear at Mad Decent Boat Party over the weekend, the 32-year old viral star elected to take a management plunge into dance music.
“My first impression of RiFF RAFF was probably similar to most, but when we really got some time to spend together, I really got to understand his vision and how wonderful of a job he has done maintaining his brand,” Shear tells Billboard. “He already is a dance act, and he could really do anything. That’s how creative he is.”
The move marks RiFF RAFF’s latest and most significant flirtation with EDM. He previously signed with Diplo’s Mad Decent label in 2012, where he released his sophomore album Neon Icon in June.
Billboard caught up with the outlandish MC on Nov. 19, before his show in Alabama, to talk about his recent move as only he can.
What drew you to the dance music scene?
“I never claimed to be a gangster rapper or a hip-hop artist. I think that’s where people get confused and question my style, which they have never seen. The reality is that I’m the first and only EDM rapper to ever exist. I’m not a cross over artist, I wasn’t a pop artist at first or in a gang, and I was never in a group, I’m the first and only EDM rapper of all time. I wear neon swim trunks and muscle shirts and have neon magenta colored hair, and have over 1.3 million dollars in real diamonds and I stay away from the haters. How could anyone confuse me for a hip-hop artist?
How did you originally meet Diplo and get signed to Mad Decent?
We’ve been friends for over 10 years. I’m the neon godfather of his kids. He pays me $70,000 a year to train his kids neon jujitsu.
What do you view your own role as within dance music?
I’m not yet a DJ, but I’m an artist so anything is possible. This is the lane I’m in, and I wouldn’t want to be in the rapper market. It doesn’t appear fun to me, and there are a lot of mean people in the world. I try to stay away from anything that doesn’t pay my $20,000 an hour.
How did that motivate you to join the Golden Hare Group?
I meet these young crazy motivated dudes on the Mad Decent Boat Party, and they seemed to have more of a worldwide approach to music, rather than a USA target market. I want to be the EDM Justin Bieber. I’m Jody Bieber and humans aren’t gonna understand that until I have 15 super hot neon models with the loudest and craziest EDM trap neon rap set on the planet, playing in Dubai or at the Taj Mahal. But I’m still growing and learning, and I will never plateau. I think everyone sees that, so I can’t wait to join the WWE and be in movies as well.

Diplo & Skrillex (Jack U) speak to NYC’s Hot 97
In a new interview with Hot 97 in New York City, Skrillex and Diplo both sat down for an extended interview that touched on a variety of topics. Immediately speaking on Riff Raff to a host that seems unconvinced by his talents, the pair eventually spoke on their roots, future endevours, and dropped an impressive list of collaborators.
When asked about the reaction from other artists to his music, Diplo revealed, “I just worked with Madonna as well and we had a bunch of songs that were standard for her, then one night we got kind of drunk and we wrote the song right there on the most ridiculous beats; it’s a record with her and Nicky Minaj. People know me and him as really progressive I hope, so when they come to us for a beat, they want something to scare their children.”
Quickly volunteering to answer the now-standard question of where electronic music is going, Skrillex jumped in and paid homage to a handful of names,”I think now it’s more diverse. In 2011, when things really got big, it was like deadmau5, then it was Justice, and then Daft Punk and it was more narrow minded. Naturally, kids are just going to have a wider range. I feel like house music coming to America is something that they never had access to.”
Sprinkled between interesting soundbites of information from two of the genre’s elite producers, Skrillex mentioned future collaborations with 2 Chainz and A$AP Ferg, while swiftly keeping quiet and deflecting attention when asked about a Nas partnership. Also revealing that Jack U has four tracks with Usher stored away, the pair’s newest joint interview touches on an excess of topics and shines light on the future of electronic music’s newest supergroup.

Skrillex Discusses Deadmau5 & Paris Hilton During Howard Stern Interview
Skrillex was interviewed by Howard Stern this morning, and they discussed a variety of topics. Early on in the interview, Stern asks Skrillex about deadmau5 seemingly insulting him. However, Skrillex responded in a very diplomatic way. He said, “He criticizes everybody. He talks shit about everybody…He was posting about me when I was first releasing music and helped a lot, released one of my first EPs on his label.”
For those who don’t remember, deadmau5 brought up Skrillex during a Rolling Stone interview in 2012. Deadmau5 said, “Even Skrillex [a friend of Zimmerman’s] isn’t doing anything too technical. He has a laptop and a MIDI recorder, and he’s just playing his shit … People are, thank God, smartening up about who does what – but there’s still button-pushers getting paid half a million.”
He also discussed Paris Hilton’s recent claims of making $1 million for some of her sets. Skrillex stated, “It is what it is, if people want to go out and pay to see her.” However, Skrillex is hesitant to believe the $1 million claim. He added, “I don’t think she makes a million dollars a night I think that’s just a rumor.”
Stern’s SoundCloud account uploaded small clips of the interview, and it’s divided by topic. You can hear Skrillex talk about his stage name and his relationship with Ellie Goulding below.
If you want to hear the full 42-minute interview, we’ve embedded it below.
Just two years ago, Stern was ridiculing deadmau5 and electronic dance music as a whole. We’ve included the clip below. However, it seems like Stern didn’t know much about DJs and producers back then, and he’s definitely learned a lot more about the industry over the past two years.
