Apple Denies Beats Music Shutdown
TechCrunch is reporting that Apple will be shutting down the Beats Music streaming service it purchased in tandem with its namesake headphones manufacturer for $3 billion, a deal announced in May and finalized in early August. TechCrunch cites five sources as confirming the Beats Music shutdown. The Beats Music app has been downloaded 5 million times since the deal’s announcement in May, claiming 250,000 paid subscriptions.
Representatives from Apple said the TechCrunch report was “simply not true.” A Beats representative also denied the story. However, a source with knowledge of the situation tells Billboard that the company “is fully committed to offering a subscription service, though changes to any existing product are always a possiblity.”
Taking this news at face value — that Beats Music is no more — could be misleading. Just last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook praised Beats Music, saying on Charlie Rose that “when I listen to theirs [Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s Beats Music streaming service] for awhile, I feel completely different, and the reason is that they recognized that human curation was important in the subscription service — that the sequencing of songs that you listen to affect how you feel.”
Not to mention that the company acquired the brain of Jimmy Iovine, which many predicted to be one a deciding factor in Apple’s purchase. As well, former Beats Music CEO Ian Rogers has been put in charge of iTunes Radio, the company’s still-burgeoning streaming option for iTunes users.
It’s not as if Apple hasn’t purchased a company before only to shutter it, before unveiling it, phoenix-style, under its own brand’s umbrella. It took Lala and made it into a feature of iTunes. It bought 3D mapping company C3, relaunching it as one aspect of its (much-maligned) Maps app.
So, most likely: RIP Beats Music logo, long live the iTunes Human-Curated Streaming Music Service.

Martin Garrix is the Richest Teenager in EDM
Last year, Celebrity Net Worth revealed its own list of the World’s Richest DJs, and the results took some people by surprise (we’re looking at you Pauly D). A year has since passed and the infamous website has continued to released its estimates of the net worth of DJs. Its latest reveal tackles 18-year-old Martin Garrix and his newly amassed fortune.
According to the site, Martin Garrix has a net worth of $14 million. Not bad for someone who can’t legally drink in the US. Now don’t be confused with Forbes’ yearly list, which focuses on yearly earnings instead of net worth (meaning you will see justifiable differences between the two reports).
In comparison, Alesso is listed as being worth $6 million, Zedd, $15 million and for those who are curious, Eric Prydz at $4.5 million.

Jamie Foxx & DJ Mustard Sued Over ‘Party Ain’t a Party’
Less than a week after Jamie Foxx released his first new song in four years, the Oscar winning actor and musician is being dragged into court over the release.
The lawsuit filed by Nontra Records on Thursday against Foxx, DJ Mustard and 2 Chainz over “Party Ain’t a Party,” is a rather atypical copyright lawsuit that centers on the accusation that an instrumental was first given to another artist, J Rand.
According to the complaint, DJ Mustard sent the instrumental to J Rand’s then record company Poe Boy Music Group to serve as underlying material for a J Rand release. The latter artist then recorded the work on his own accord — and Poe Boy “possessed sole ownership in the copyright of the sound recording.”
Nontra Records, the plaintiff, says it acquired all rights when it bought out J Rand’s contract from Poe Boys, and thereafter, paid to mix and master J Rand’s song.
As promotion, California radio stations began premiering J Rand’s “upcoming DJ Mustard-produced single” last November, but Nontra says it failed to reach DJ Mustard on the promotional campaign. He “went radio silent and failed to respond to their advances,” says the lawsuit.
Then, Foxx’s song came out, with credited instrumentals to DJ Mustard, which the plaintiff notes as being substantially similar to J Rand’s work. Not just the instrumental, but the words too.
“Specifically, the underlying material and Jaime Foxx’s lyrics contained in the Subsequent Work are identical to the lyrics sung by J Rand in the sound recording of the Original Work,” states the lawsuit.
Nontra alleges that the “only discernible difference” between the two recordings is the use of 2 Chainz as a guest artist.
The plaintiff is demanding at least $150,000 from the defendants for copyright infringement. The lawsuit also carries a claim of contributory copyright infringement against Fox for allegedly distributing the work widely.
“DJ Mustard did not grant any rights to a third party to exploit the recording, “Party Ain’t A Party, ” and, accordingly, this claim against DJ Mustard has absolutely no merit,” a legal representative for DJ Mustard said in a statement.
Below are both songs and the complaint.

Tiesto Joins Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson in the Records Book
Electronic Music superstar Tiesto recently had the honor of having his latest album, A Town Called Paradise featured on the Fountains of Bellagio show in Las Vegas. This marks the first time ever that an electronic music artist has had their content featured on the Bellagio Hotel’s famed water show. Not only that, but it also marked the first show where the show’s creator collaborated with the music’s actual artist.
“Dance music has come so far in the past few years in Las Vegas and also around the world,” Tiesto said on his Instagram. “This is a huge statement about the power of the music that we all love.”
Tiesto is right, being featured on the Fountains of Bellagio truly is a testament to how far he has come. In doing so, he has joined the likes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Jackson who have all been previously featured on the show as well. Check out the show below and watch as the fountains dance away to “Footprints,” “Rocky,” and “Red Lights,” in the Vegas night.

Alesso Teaches Zac Efron How to DJ for Movie Role
About a week ago, news dropped that Zac Efron is set to star in an EDM-centric film, titled “We Are Your Friends”. Max Joseph, from MTV’s “Catfish,” co-wrote the movie and is taking on directing duties. Inspired by his love of electronic music, Joseph noted that the plot revolves around a young DJ, played by Zac Efron, who’s trying to make it big in the Hollywood nightlife scene. Thankfully, it seems the art of DJ’ing is being treated seriously in the movie, as Alesso is mentoring the young actor in preparation for the role.
A few days ago, the superstar DJ and producer tweeted a picture of himself and Efron, stating, “it was a pleasure to have you as my first DJ student.” While we are still hesitant in admitting any sort of excitement for this movie after taking into account the cast and the obviously cheesy branding of it, this is a fun little fact that adds the tiniest glimmer of hope. Maybe. We Are Your Friends hits theaters sometime in 2015.

Pioneer DJ Sold For $551 Million
Japan’s internationally recognised audio company Pioneer is selling off its DJing equipment branch to a US firm for $551 million, Reuters reported this week. Pioneer DJ – the brand behind such iconic products as the CDJ-500 (the world’s first DJ-oriented CD player) – will be sold to private equity firm KKR & Co by March next year, to allow Pioneer to concentrate on its automotive electronics business. Pioneer also announced the sale of its home AV sector to Onkyo Corp last week.
“We’re trying to transform our auto-related business and are investing a lot into that… We realised we wouldn’t be able to invest in the DJ business so it would be better to spin it off and grow it independently,” Pioneer President Susumu Kotani told a press conference, despite the fact that Pioneer’s DJing products currently have a 60-percent share of the global DJ equipment market, and the brand made a 20-percent profit last financial year.
Pioneer will retain a 14.95-percent vote in Pioneer DJ under the terms of the agreement. The private equity firm KKR is famous for making leveraged buyouts of companies – including the famous $25 billion buyout of Oreo manufacturer RJR Nabisco in 1988, renowned for being the largest ever buyout at that time. The London Evening Standard reports that the buyout signals a move by KKR to “tap into the booming global dance music scene.” Take a look back at the birth of the iconic CDJ-500 in this instructional video from 1994.

Rihanna Blasts CBS
Last week, in the wake of the Ray Rice scandal, CBS pulled the new Thursday Night Football opener, which features Don Cheadle narrating over Rihanna’s verses from the hit “Run This Town.” Given that Rihanna is one of pop culture’s most famous victims of domestic violence, perhaps the NFL decided this wasn’t the best possible way to begin rebranding in the wake of the incident.
But now a week has passed, and CBS apparently decided no one cares anymore! So they’re going to reinstate the opener — but now Rihanna is pissed.
There are no winners here.
UPDATE: A rep for CBS Sports provided the following statement to Billboard, seeming to imply that “Run This Town” was permanently out. “Beginning this Thursday, we will be moving in a different direction with some elements of our Thursday Night Football open. We will be using our newly created Thursday Night Football theme music to open our game broadcast.”

Sir Mix-A-Lot on Nicki Minaj’s ‘Anaconda
Sir Mix-A-Lot didn’t think he’d still be talking about his classic hit “Baby Got Back” decades after its release. Since the anthem impacted back in 1992, the 51-year old rapper has become the godfather of booty records, which have recently made a mainstream comeback thanks to records like Jennifer Lopez’s “Booty” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” But booty fever has remained a cultural constant throughout the years thanks to his smash single’s staying power, sung by characters on Friends and The Simpsons and soundtracking everything from children’s films (Shrek) to Oscar picks (The Wolf of Wall Street).
Most recently, “Baby Got Back” returned the charts by way of Nicki Minaj heavily sampling the track on her hit “Anaconda,” currently sitting at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In honor of the single’s success, Sir Mix-A-Lot spoke with Billboard about how the “Anaconda” sample came about, the mainstream’s sudden focus on butts and why “Baby Got Back” has persevered for so long.
When did you learn that “Baby Got Back” was going to be sampled?
Nicki got my manager’s number through Universal, we both have deals with Universal, and she got on the phone with us one night. It was just old school vibing. She had this idea she was feeling pretty good about. We had already told her it was cool to use it [but] she called back saying she wanted to change something about the chorus. She ended up coming up with all the ideas. Next thing I know, the song was done. One thing I’ll say about her is she’s a beast in the studio. I think sometimes, people look at the sexy stuff and they think she shows up and does her vocal time and then leaves. No. That girl works hard. I was very impressed with her work ethic.
Did she send you drafts or did she just ask your permission to sample it?
I had just heard small little snippets of what was going on. After that, she didn’t send anything, which was understandable, because things get leaked and it takes the edge off the release. I understood why there were no copies.
When you first heard the record, what was your impression?
I really like it and it’s funny because some people tell me, ‘oh, that’s not the meaning of ‘Baby Got Back,’ because it’s not “Baby Got Back!” Don’t get me started on that. But, when I first heard it, I really liked it. I liked the change in feel. She did a lot of things, like at one point she really slowed the track down at half-speed and then went back to full speed. It was pretty fun. It was a cool song. Continue reading →
Zedd Talks Collaborations
Vice and Absolut Vodka teamed up Friday to host a high-glam industrial rave on a pier in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood that featured performances by electronic hip-hop producer AraabMuzik and Washington, D.C. DJ Alvin Risk, as well as a surprise headline set by Zedd. The event was part of a series called “Nights by Absolut” that will continue with stops in South Africa, Germany and Brazil. Each stop will be filmed for the vodka company’s advertisements next year.
The Grammy-winning German house producer — whose electro-pop hits “Clarity” and “Break Free” have hit the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 — revealed himself in a climactic arrival, climbing out from a shipping container that was lowered onto the stage. And as the crowd erupted in excitement, cameras rolled for an Absolut advertising campaign documenting the rave dream scene: Long entrance corridors shaped by storage containers opened into a neon-lit stage with food trucks, sprawling bars, selfie-photo booths by the Phhhoto App, colorful drinks served in mason jars and above the dance floor hovered a gigantic mirrored disco ball designed by the Vita Motus, which designs Coachella’s Do Lab. (In other words, it should make for a pretty cool commercial.) Continue reading →
