Watch The Trailer For New EDM TV Series ‘Momentum’
With electronic music dominating the charts and continuously furthering its influence upon American culture, the genre’s dramatization in film has become a logical development. The first major attempt at this feat, 2015’s We Are Your Friends starring Zac Efron, turned out to be a notorious flop. However, that hasn’t deterred other filmmakers from tackling the topic, as Netflix recently debuted its own feature-length entry, XOXO. This fall, electronic music will receive its own TV series with indie production, Momentum.
In its debut trailer, the series lays out its premise: protagonist Michael Morris is a struggling young man who produces as a hobby. When one of his tracks is released to the internet without his knowledge, he’s soon caught up in a whirlwind of fame and touring. In contrast to the likes of We Are Your Friends, Momentum‘s creators seem to be committed to and invested in growing the electronic scene and making sure it’s represented authentically.

Daft Punk & The Weeknd In The Studio
The last time we properly saw Daft Punk was on stage at the 2014 Grammy Awards ceremony, where the duo performed Get Lucky and won big in multiple categories. Now, thanks to a surprise revelation from Republic Records’ executive VP and head of urban A&R Wendy Goldstein, we know the robots are active again.
In a recent ‘Hitmakers Roundtable’ video from Billboard, Goldstein casually dropped the news that Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo are in the studio with crossover R&B star The Weeknd.
The panel of label executives and songwriters was asked which artists they’d most want to work with. “Actually, we have a session coming up in two days, with The Weeknd and Daft Punk,” Goldstein said. “I’ve always been a massive Daft Punk fan, and this is the first time that I’ve actually been involved with an artist who’s going to go and work with them.”
Unfortunately, this tidbit doesn’t mean Daft Punk is working on its follow-up to Random Access Memories. The collaboration is likely to turn up on The Weeknd’s next album, which follows 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness. The Weeknd recently posted a photo of Daft Punk figurines sitting on a speaker, following it up with a snap of himself standing alongside Norwegian bass wizard Cashmere Cat in the studio.
This of course wouldn’t be the first time Daft Punk have helped out a chart-topping star in the studio. Back in 2013, ahead of Random Access Memories, the duo played a central role in the production for Kanye West’s album Yeezus. Their work on tracks including Black Skinhead and I Am a God had a raw, visceral edge that didn’t come out on their own disco-indebted album. Adding to the symmetry, Cashmere Cat co-produced Wolves from Kanye’s most recent album The Life of Pablo.
This Daft Punk diehards might’ve preferred news of a tour or an album in development, it’s good to know Thomas and Guy-Man haven’t decided to disappear.

Steve Aoki to be Cryogenically Frozen
Steve Aoki feeds off attempting the impossible. In his own Netflix documentary, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, viewers gain a window into the cake-throwing personality’s non-stop, jet-setting lifestyle of playing over 300 shows a year and touching every corner of the world in the process. Aoki recently sat down for a follow-up interview with Rolling Stone to talk about the documentary, his upcoming collaborations, and his personal quest for immortality that includes having his body cryogenically frozen.
Aoki revealed he has already arranged for his body to be cryogenically frozen once he passes in hopes of science either reviving him full-form or implanting his brain into a computer. He will pay around $220,000 to Arizona’s Alcor Life Extension Foundation to preserve his body at sub-zero temperatures in hopes that science will advance enough to bring him back to life at a later date.

Pizza Hut Restaurants Introduces The World’s First Playable DJ Pizza Box
In a move virtually guaranteed to upset the purists, Pizza Hut has announced a limited edition DJ controller built into a pizza box. It syncs via Bluetooth to your laptop or smartphone and works with DJ software including Serato, letting you control two decks and a mixer by simply touching the cardboard controls printed on the box itself.
Unfortunately they don’t guarantee you’ll be delivering great DJ sets within 30 minutes or your money back, and frankly we don’t think you’ll be earning your crust any time soon DJing using this particular model. But the takeaway for pizza-loving DJs is that – as long as you live in the UK – you’ll be able to get your hands on one very soon.
Smoking hot or half baked? We’ll let you know as soon as our review sample arrives, but we do have one early criticism: We can’t see anywhere to plug in your garlic breadphones.

Cubs Fire DJ Who Made Extremely Poor Song Choice
The Chicago Cubs have fired the Wrigley Field DJ who was responsible for making a remarkably poor music choice during Sunday night’s game, according to The Chicago Tribune.
After Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth inning, the song “Smack My B—- Up” blared from the Wrigley Field speakers.
It didn’t take long for those in attendance to notice that the team was playing an extremely inappropriate and insensitive tune, especially considering Chapman was involved in a domestic violence incident last offseason.
Chapman closes out the inning & at the inning break the Cubs play “Smack My Bitch Up.” You gotta know better. C’mon.
— Sarah Spain (@SarahSpain) August 15, 2016
Awkward moment when @Cubs play “smack my b*** up” when Aroldis Chapman pitches. Someone’s going to get fired tomorrow.
— Chris (@poelstra13) August 15, 2016
The public outcry from the Sunday evening debacle carried into Monday morning, eventually pressuring the Cubs into firing the person responsible and issuing an apology for the mistake.
Cubs president Crane Kenney’s statement (via The Chicago tribune):
“The selection of this track showed a lack of judgment and sensitivity to an important issue,” Kenney said. “We have terminated our relationship with the employee responsible for making the selection and will be implementing stronger controls to review and approve music before public broadcast during our games.”
While it’s unfortunate that someone had to lose their job, it was the right move by the Cubs — as it’s almost unfathomable that such a tone-deaf decision was ever made in the first place. Regardless of who was on the mound, a Major League Baseball game doesn’t seem like an appropriate place to play a song that continuously repeats the lyrics “Smack My B—- Up.”

Laidback Luke Discusses The Art Of DJ’ing With Jauz
Earlier in the week, Jauz took to Facebook to share a lengthy story about his set at Lollapalooza. In the post, he goes on to explain that he had prepared an epic set for his performance at the festival, only to realize once he was on stage that he had forgotten to transfer the set to his USB and was forced to improvise the entire show on the fly.
While the post seemed innocent enough, it prompted Laidback Luke to join in on a discussion via Twitter about the art of DJ’ing. In a series of Tweets, the Dutch DJ offered up his take on the skill that goes into his craft.
Let me start by saying I love @Jauzofficial As a dude and producer. But let me give some of you some tips to become more confident DJing.
— Laidback Luke (@LaidbackLuke) August 9, 2016
Just like producing, DJing requires a lot of learning. There’s a ton of theory involved which will benefit you, just like producing.
— Laidback Luke (@LaidbackLuke) August 9, 2016
It’s a shame that a lot of DJing producers, don’t stick enough time into developing DJing. It’s fun and so much more powerful!
— Laidback Luke (@LaidbackLuke) August 9, 2016
But if you don’t know how to read a crowd: challenge yourself and play the whole tracklist in reverse! The possibilities are endless!
— Laidback Luke (@LaidbackLuke) August 9, 2016
The issue of what constitutes “true” DJ’ing is a cantankerous topic that gets brought up in dance music all the time, and Jauz and Luke won’t be the last to touch on it. Laidback Luke seemed friendly in his discussion, however, and his ability to engage in a civil discourse about DJ’ing has plenty of positive implications for the scene as a whole.
