Laidback Luke announces first album in 13 years, ‘Focus’
Laidback Luke has been far from lacking in terms of original releases, but it’s been a whopping 13 years since fans saw a full album from the Filipino-Dutch stalwart. Focus, Lucas van Scheppingen’s newest project, will be released on November 6th via his own Mixmash Records.
The album will dish up 16 tracks and feature collaborations with Benny Benassi, Yellow Claw, Trevor Guthrie, GTA, and D.O.D., with Focus’ first single, “Let It Go,” to debut on October 18th. A lover of all genres and artists, Luke emphatically shared that his forthcoming album will contain “a combination of various styles, because electronic music is still all the same family to me.” Despite facing criticism in recent years for “selling out,” he assures fans that Focus is intended to be a representation of his time spent enjoying his role as a producer, rather than a stale offering of recycled sounds and styles.

Sam Smith & Disclosure cover Drake’s “Hotling Bling”
Chris Brown & Ed Sheeran perform “Loyal” @ Drais Nightclub
Chris Brown had Vegas going up over Labor Day weekend. While hosting a gig at Drai’s Beachclub on Sunday (Sept. 6), he welcomed a slew of surprise performers including Nelly, Trey Songz, Jeremih, and Ed Sheeran. The British crooner shared the stage with Breezy for his hit “Loyal.” With drink in hand, Ed rapped along to the explicit lyrics as the crowd cheered him on.
This is not the first time he has performed the song—he previously performed it on tour.
Ed also thrilled with his acoustic jam “Thinking Out Loud” as Nelly and Breezy sang along.

Angry Ghost of Meek Mill Roams the Club Unsatisfied, Yelling at Drake Fans
A group gathered at Brooklyn’s Fools Gold’s Day Off party on Monday was interrupted by a strange, chilling occurrence. Though no one of this realm seemed to be performing at the time, a ghastly voice rang out over the venue’s sound system, telling a man in the crowd to puuut dooown his Draaake siiign.
“Put that Drake sign up again, nigga! Fuck you talkin’ about, you fuckin’ clown?!” the apparition wailed from the life beyond this one. The air in the room suddenly grew frosty, and if anyone there had been packing an EMF detector, it seems safe to guess that it would have jumped wildly.
“I want you to stand next him all night,” the voice said, apparently speaking to someone on the stage. This person then moved into the crowd as if in a trance, compelled by the poltergeist’s command, and stood near the man with the sign.
The rest of the night proceeded without incident, and the dissatisfied spirit that roamed the stage did no harm to any of the Drake fans. After a satisfying evening, they all dispersed and returned to their homes, the spell broken.
No one knows who the ghost was or what it wanted—it apparently doesn’t show up on video, although its bone-rattling voice can be heard in a recording of the incident.
Drake’s Views from the 6 comes out later this year. Everyone is looking forward to it.

Dan Bilzerian Calls Out Electric Zoo After Allegedly Spending $650,000 On VIP
Some rich people just love spending money, and Dan Bilzerian is surely no exception. The trust-fund brat turned playboy knows how to party. and proved it more than ever this past weekend with his own private $650,000 VIP section at Electric Zoo festival in New York City. Featuring the likes of Alesso, Above & Beyond and The Chemical Brothers as headliners, Dan didn’t even stick around long enough to witness the final day of performances today.
The notorious social media star didn’t leave happy, however, and vehemently tweeted at the promoters with a serious case of buyers remorse. Sources assert that EZoo didn’t deliver on some of its promises, including personal pyro and an elevated viewing platform.
Apparently spending over half a million on VIP at a festival famous for being cursed by weather, and criticized for its highly prevalent undercover cops, wasn’t the best idea in the world. Coming from such an educated and intelligent individual, it’s no wonder Bilzerian didn’t figure that one out before he sent in the check.

Dubai set to host debut EDM Conference
In recent years, Dubai has built itself to be a major tourism hub. Located on the coast of the United Arab Emirates, one of the richest countries in the world, the coastal city boasts a wide array of luxury hotels, shopping, and of course clubs. Though located in a more conservative part of the world, Western influence as a result of the city’s booming tourism industry has allowed EDM to establish its presence as a relevant part of the city’s nightlife.
Due to this increased attention and appreciation of the music in the area, Blue Leaf, a music consultancy firm, has rolled out its plans for Dubai’s debut music conference, to take place on February 18th and 19th. The conference, modeled after Miami’s Winter Music Conference (WMC), will take place at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai and will feature “electronic music’s leading thinkers, artists, global brands and technology pioneers,” according to Digital Production Middle East. Like the WMC, Dubai’s version will also be accompanied with a music festival occurring both days of the conference.
The director of Blue Leaf, Cory Gibbons, commented, “With the flock of A-list DJs that regularly play the city’s superior clubs and venues, it is no wonder Dubai is steadily making its mark on the global dance music scene. As a leading business and entertainment destination, Dubai presents the perfect location for the region’s first electronic music festival.” The lineup is set to be released sometime in the near future.

Burning Man has been monitored by the FBI for the past 5 years
As if Burning Man hasn’t dealt with enough before their 29th annual gathering like issues of bug infestation, the death of a playa worker and a possible move due to new tax laws, new FBI documents obtained by MuckRock have been released detailing the government agency’s tracking of “burner” activities on the playa for the past five years. After a 2012 Freedom of Information Act request from Inkoo Kang, a 16-page file was presented that highlights some of the agency’s biggest focuses such as “the use of illegal drugs by participants” and “crowd control issues.”
Even more fascinating are the numerous redactions in the file, possibly suggesting the FBI has undercover agents posing as “burners” – otherwise known in the documents as “sworn officers” – and even “test case” scenarios for suspicion of “terrorist activities and intelligence collection.” Check out the documents in full here.
Burning Man takes place in Black Rock Desert in Nevada on August 30 to September 7.

Zac Efron’s “We Are Your Friends” Movie Has One of the Worst Opening Weekends of All Time
With Lukewarm reviews, at best, and significant push back from dance music fans, hopes weren’t high for the Zac Efron vehicle “We Are Your Friends.” However, few would have anticipated the entirely-competent looking production to crash and burn so terribly at the box-office. Deadline reports that the flick pulled in an “awful” $1.8 million over the weekend, with showings on a sizable 2,333 screens. This paltry amount ranks “We Are Your Friends” in the top 10 worst wide-release box openings of all time, at the number 3 spot, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Going into the weekend, “Straight Outta Compton” was expected to dominate the box-office for the third week in a row, while “We Are Your Friends,” a mainstream studio release, was supposed to at least best “War Room,” a niche low-budget film with almost no stars in its cast. In reality, “War Room” trounced the movie. The film’s bankable star, Efron, will probably emerge from the wreckage relatively unscathed, but “We Are Your Friends”‘ spectacular failure raises many important questions regarding electronic dance music and it’s place in mainstream media, and it will be fascinating to watch how this development helps shape the future of the industry. Stay tuned for more information as we get it.
