Beatport Announce 24-Hour Live Stream For Coronavirus Benefit Funds
Times are strange, as everyone worldwide is currently experiencing, but there are snippets of good news and tidings to get us through this.
Once such example is everyone’s favourite dance music download store Beatport, who have just announced a raft of live-streams taking place over a 24-hour period on Friday (March 27). The “global dance party” is set to feature a raft of names, including Carl Cox, Bonobo, Nina Kraviz, Griz, Rüfüs Du Sol, A-Trak, Nicole Moudaber, Chris Liebing and Nora En Pure.
Speaking of the announcement, Beatport CEO Robb McDaniels said:
“Over the past few weeks, we have seen so much of humanity come together as one to battle the escalation of the COVID-19 virus in an effort to protect the most vulnerable. With so many of us sheltered in our homes, wanting to stay connected to the people and music that plays such a positive role in our lives, Beatport and the passionate DJ community we work with on a daily basis feel compelled to deliver a unique music experience directly into homes across the world.”
As countries across the world go into increasing levels of lockdown, it’s some small light on the horizon that we can still enjoy the music that unites us all. There’s an added bonus too, as anyone tuning into the stream on Twitch will be able to donate to the World Health Fund’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and the COVID-19 Hardship Fund benefitting members of the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM.) Amazon Stops CD & Vinyl Orders Due To COVID-19
The recent outbreak of the novel COVID-19 virus has a huge impact on the electronic music dance scene. Hundreds of shows around the world are getting cancelled and postponed, but this is not the only thing.
Amazon, one of the biggest online shopping platforms out there is also taking special measures during these hectic times, they will be disabling shipment creation for non-essential product orders.
The vendors that will be affected by this may vary, but one of the things included is CDs and vinyls. The postponement of these particular orders is set to last at least until 5th of April, but with the crisis situation still getting worse, it might extend if necessary.
The limitations that Amazon has applied will allow them to focus on household staples, medical supplies and other high demand products that people might need to get through the quarantine time. The company will be halting any orders of CD, vinyl and merchandise products from its warehouses for the time being. In a letter sent by Amazon to customers regarding the changes that they were forced to make they say:
“We are seeing increased online shopping, and, as a result, some products such as household staples and medical supplies are out of stock. With this in mind, we are temporarily prioritizing household staples, medical supplies, and other high-demand products coming into our fulfillment centers so that we can more quickly receive, restock, and deliver these products to customers.”
When a giant company like Amazon does something like this, we can be sure that the whole vinyl and CD industry will be affected. At the beginning of the year the RIAA was projecting vinyl of having a fantastic growth in the upcoming months. The retail dollar value of vinyl shipments in the United States last year grew by 18.7%, or $78.4m to $497.6m, but with the possible crisis that might happen due to coronavirus, nothing is set in stone anymore.

Tape Scratching The “Peter Piper” Routine
To debut my fifth ScrubBoard prototype, I’m doing my take on DJ Jazzy Jeff’s “Peter Piper” routine. The Scrubboard is a completely handmade tape-scratching device that uses two-inch wide open reel audio tape. It has a dry-erase markable surface on the tape loop so users can mark up their samples. It also features a foot-controlled transport motor, and can record live audio to the tape loop and then scratch it in real time!

Moog & Korg Make Synth Apps Free To Help Musicians Stuck At Home
If you’re a musician (or fan) whose concerts got scrapped over coronavirus concerns, you’ll at least have more tools to produce music when you’re at home. To start, Moog has made its Minimoog Model D iOS synth app available for free. It wasn’t hugely expensive to start, but this could make it easy to recreate the first portable synth and slip some Kraftwerk- or Dr. Dre-inspired sounds into your latest track. Moog didn’t say how long the price change would last, but you might want to act quickly.
Not to be left out, Korg is doing the same for its Kaossilator apps, which normally cost close to $20. Android artists can grab the software for no charge until March 20th, 2020, while the iOS crowd has until March 31st to get iKaossilator. Either app makes the most sense if you’re more into looping audio and variety than strict technical realism, but that may be all you need to add some spice to a future hit.
