DDJ-200: Pioneer DJ’s New $149 Beginner Controller
Remember how last week, electronic music blogs were excited to announce the clickbait misunderstanding that Pioneer DJ was “exiting the DJ business”? Today’s announcement proves that nothing could be further from the truth, as Pioneer DJ announces their brand new DDJ-200 controller, designed to be their newest entry level beginner DJ controller.
It’s pretty wild to see Pioneer DJ pack so many features and offerings into what is now the cheapest DJ hardware that they offer – here’s a quick roundup of the features:
Designed to work with smartphones (via Bluetooth 4.2)
USB bus powered (there’s a single USB-B port) – which can be powered with basic 5v USB power banks (like for charging your phone).
Compatible with WeDJ, edjing, djay, and rekordbox apps
Tutorial functionality when used with WeDJ (summarizes the basics of the DJ hardware) as well as a “Pop-Hint” feature that explains each button’s function on the hardware

Beatport Announces DJ Subscription Service ‘Beatport LINK’
In the spirit of its “for DJs, by DJs ethos,” Beatport has announced a new subscription service for selectors, Beatport LINK.
Launched in beta on Tuesday (May 14), the service makes the digital music retailer’s entire catalog available for subcribers to directly stream audio files onto performance software. Alongside Beatport LINK, the Berlin-based company will also release a beta version of Beatport CLOUD, which includes features like track previews (through Beatport’s own Needle Drop Player), re-downloads of previously purchased tracks and a brand-new My Library section. There’s also something for beginners: Beatport LINK’s first performance software integration is available through Pioneer DJ’s WeDJ app, tailored to those just getting started on the ones and twos.
“The launch of Beatport LINK exhibits our commitment to creating the best possible experience for our expanding ecosystem of DJs, and we can think of no better partner than Pioneer DJ for the service’s first software integration. We are particularly excited to introduce the upcoming Offline Performance Mode, which firmly sets Beatport LINK apart from its competitors in the DJ market,” said Beatport CEO Robb McDaniels in a statement.

Diplo – “So Long” feat. Cam – Video
Diplo continues his country kick and takes us behind-the-scenes of Stagecoach with his new music video for “So Long” featuring Cam.
Many of us will instantly recognize the festival grounds and Ferris wheel signature of Coachella, but that’s also where they throw the massive country event, which Diplo recently played. Stagecoach doesn’t look too much different than Coachella, but the soundtrack is entirely different. “So Long” is the vibe.
The DJ/producer already has his country name, Thomas Wesley, on lock. Here, he demonstrates he can fit right into the lifestyle by crushing beer cans, tearing around in golf carts, rocking camo and a cowboy hat.
In addition to his collaborator on this track, the new music video features cameos from Billy Ray Cyrus, Lil Nas X, Guy Fieri and more. Keep your eyes peeled!

Pioneer May Leave The DJ Industry, According To Reports
Pioneer Corp. is on the verge of leaving the DJ industry, according to new reports.
Japanese media outlet Nikkei Business has outlined that KKR & Co., which owns 85 per cent of Pioneer DJ, along with Pioneer Corp., owning just 15 per cent, are both in negotiations to sell off their entire stock of Pioneer DJ to new buyers. If the sale comes to fruition, Pioneer Corp. will completely withdraw from the DJ equipment business.
Fund officials who are considering to bid on the stock, have said “the final sale amount will be about 60 billion to 70 billion yen,” which comes to about $500 million.
Pioneer DJ’s sales reached 25 billion yen in 2015, just over $225 million. Its EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes and amortization) was nearly 6 billion yen, which is over $54 million. It is expected to continue to surpass these numbers in the coming years.
While Pioneer DJ remains the industry standard in the DJ industry and controls nearly 70 per cent of the global share in DJ equipment, the Pioneer Corp. has been restructuring as of late. It laid of 3,000 workers in January and received a bail out of $930 million from Baring Private Equity Asia, according to Japan Time.

Hercules DJControl Starlight Review – Good for new DJs?
Today’s DJ controller market has more variety than ever before. While much of the attention is given to the big flagship controllers with their expansive features and often high price tag, it’s worth taking a look at what a small and more budget-friendly controller can offer, both to beginners and experienced digital DJs.
The Hercules DJControl Starlight controller is one such controller. It’s a compact two-channel device that features touch-sensitive jogwheels, four performance pads for each deck, knobs to control low EQ or a high-pass low-pass filter, and works plug-and-play with Serato DJ Lite. It’s built mainly of plastic, so the controller is lightweight but likely not as durable as more premium controllers – keep it safe in a case or in your DJ bag.
Though aimed at beginners, experienced DJs may find that this compact controller can be handy as a backup. Since it is powered via USB, it could easily be used while on a plane or train, to practise a set or record a mix. For DJs who work in venues with limited space in the DJ booth, this small controller can be a big help.
