Tiesto Switches From Pioneer CDJS to New Denon DJ Prime Series
Pioneer are certainly the most well-known brand when it comes to DJ equipment, with their infamous CDJs seemingly at the top of every budding DJ’s wishlist. However, Denon have been attracting a lot of attention lately in the DJ scene, with their latest technology persuading even some of the worlds top DJs to switch brands. One of the DJs who chose to branch out was superstar Tiësto, who is without doubt one of the world’s most sought-after performing artists.
Due to Tiësto’s prowess in performing, his opinion carries huge weight in the scene, and his decision will undoubtedly cause a stir among the DJ community. The Dutch superstar recently made the decision to request Denon mixers on his rider when performing, a decision that will be a huge boost for the brand. However, Tiësto is not the only top DJ to support the brand, with Laidback Luke, Oliver Heldens and Paul Oakenfold all having made the switch to Denon mixers.

J. Balvin Climbs To The Top of Latin Pop
Colombian pop and hip-hop artist J Balvin isn’t just blowing up; he’s moving music around the globe in innovative ways. When he dropped the “Latino Remix” of Justin Bieber’s smash “Sorry” two years ago, he expanded his reach beyond the reggaeton and Latin pop markets and legitimized the Biebs’ track for his own fans.
It was nothing new for the rapidly rising performer born José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, who has earned just as much attention for his collaborations with other artists as for his own work. He sang on the Colombian version of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” in 2013, right before releasing his second album, La Familia, which charted four top-10 singles in his home country.
More recently, his voice has appeared on songs with Julión Álvarez, Juan Gabriel, Sofia Carson and Alejandro Sanz, and his “Safari,” an infectious party track, features Pharrell Williams, BIA and Sky. Last year’s Energia features contributions from Daddy Yankee, Juanes and Yandel, among others, and his live performances with Camila Cabello at the MTV Movie & TV Awards and Bad Bunny at the Billboard Latin Music Awards have quickly catapulted him into the musical stratosphere.
He’s a key figure in what might be the hottest global musical genre in the industry, and once you get a taste of what J Balvin can do, you’ll understand why.

Nas & Lauryn Hill to Reunite for Upcoming Summer Tour
In what’s now 20-plus years in the making, stemming back to their 1996 classic, “If I Ruled The World,” hip-hop luminaries Nas and Lauryn Hill have finally announced a joint tour this summer, the Life Is Good/Black Rage Tour. The festivities kick off next month with Hill going solo for a couple of shows before teaming up with Nas in September along with Chronixx and, on select dates, Hannibal Buress. When asked about the tour, Ms. Hill had the following to say:
I use the performance platform as an opportunity to express the energy of that moment, and the intention behind it. I’ve been a long standing rebel against the stale, over-commoditization. As artists, we have opportunity to help the public evolve, raise consciousness and awareness; teach, heal, enlighten and inspire in ways the democratic process may not be able to touch. So we keep it moving.

Duke Dumont Produces Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj’s ‘Swish Swish’
Pop star Katy Perry made quite a splash over the weekend with the surprise release of her new single called ‘Swish Swish’ featuring rapper Nicki Minaj. The beat shies away from her usual upbeat pop sound and instead, has tapped into production that sounds a lot more comfortable in the house realm.
It all begins to make a little more sense when looking at the producers listed on the track, which includes London-born Duke Dumont, New York’s Promnite and a producer named Mailbox.
The song made big headlines as it is rumoured to be a diss track towards Taylor Swift, a longtime celebrity rival of Katy Perry’s. The track’s lyrics are obviously tilted towards someone, though Perry has avoided naming anyone in particular… so far.

K-Pop Star PSY Makes a Comeback With Two New Music Videos
As the fifth anniversary of “Gangnam Style” approaches, K-Pop star PSY is making a comeback with his eighth album 4×2=8 and two new music videos. 4×2=8 was released (May 10) in tow with dual singles “New Face” and “I Luv It.”
Billboard reports that “I Luv It” is directed against his haters and shows PSY against various backdrops and a counter tallying billions of YouTube views, which references the 2012 hit that remains the most-watched video of all time on the site. PPAP singer Pikotaro and actor Lee Byung Hun (of G.I. Joe and Terminator) join PSY in the video.
“New Face” stars K-Pop starlet Naeun, who is part of the girl group Apink. In the video she portrays a woman that PSY is pursuing. 4×2=8 is his first release since Chiljip Psy-da in 2015, and features 10 tracks and two singles.

Popular DJ School Dubspot Accused of Scamming Students
Former students and teachers of the internationally renowned electronic music production and DJ school Dubspot have accused its CEO Dan Giove of fraudulent activities and erratic behavior, THUMP has learned. In emails seen by THUMP, over 55 students alleged that the school did not deliver the classes which they had paid for upfront, and in some cases have not issued refunds.
In the emails, students complained of poor communication on the part of the school’s staff, and classes being rescheduled multiple times. Students also said that when they did manage to go to a class, there was often no instructor present because they themselves had not been paid their teacher’s fee and refused to teach.
Nina Braith, from Austria, had paid $4,396 for an Ableton Live Producer Certificate course at Dubspot’s New York location that was due to start in March. After not hearing from the staff about an official start date, she went to the school in April to see what was going on in person. “The school was a mess,” she told THUMP. “There was hardly any equipment there anymore and I was offended by a guy who was [at the school], and rudely asked me to leave.”
Mike Henderson (a.k.a DJ Endo)—a former early employee of Dubspot who helped design much of the school’s digital DJing curriculum, including a Traktor class he taught with notable DJ Shiftee—recently quit the company. He told THUMP he was given audio gear by an apologetic CEO Dan Giove in lieu of owed paychecks and commissions.
THUMP has also seen a lengthy email thread originating from an email address called “Dubspotowesme” with numerous disgruntled Dubspot customers, who connected with one another to share their stories and discuss potential legal action they could take against the school. Among those on the chain include a mom who bought her son a series of classes as a postgraduate course, two Austrian natives who obtained visas and apartments in the United States to take Dubspot courses, as well as various other students whose stories seemed to follow a similar theme.
