35 Dead In Istanbul New Year’s Eve Terror Attack
Turkish officials said at least 35 people were killed and dozens more wounded when gunmen disguised in Santa suits opened fire inside an Istanbul nightclub on New Year’s Eve.
CNN Turk reported the attack took place at a nightclub in the Besiktas neighborhood. The European Pressphoto Agency reported the name of the nightclub as Reina, a popular spot for young people. Images from the scene showed a heavy police presence around the perimeter of the club.
The New York Times reported the club was packed with an estimated 600 patrons when shots rang out around 1:15 a.m. local time.
The state-run Anadula news agency quoted Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin, saying a gunman shot a police officer providing security and another person to gain entry to the club, where civilians were targeted “by spraying bullets on innocent people who were celebrating the New Year.”
Sahin called the incident a “terror attack.”
The Hurriyet Daily News reported club patrons began jumping into the waters of the Bosporus Strait to escape the shooting. The high-end club is a frequent destination for celebrities visiting Istanbul and sits on the shore of the Bosporus, which separates Europe and Asia. The club lies in the heart of a vibrant food and nightclub district frequented by international tourists.
The Times reported Turkish officials had stepped up security efforts surrounding New Year’s Eve celebrations after warnings from U.S. intelligence officials in the days prior that an attack was possible.
The attackers have not been identified and it was unclear how many people were involved in the plot. Initial reports suggested as many as three shooters. It was also not immediately known if they remain at large or were killed by police responding to the incident.

Beatport’s Top Artists Of The Year By Genre
Beatport has released its annual year-end data, titled “Best of Beatport 2016,” recapping the biggest artists, tracks, and labels of the year. While in past years they’ve placed emphasis on the top selling artists of the year, for 2016, they’ve broken down rankings by genre and popularity. Furthermore, in a similar fashion to other ‘top artist’ polls, they’ve let the fans do the voting.
The results are now in, and all things considered, they’re a fairly accurate representation of the top artists by genre — excluding the strange nomination of Diplo for Electro House. While certainly not a concrete metric, the results reinforce the artists’ widespread renown in their respective fields. Eric Prydz, for instance, is widely considered the king of progressive house, while the same could be said about Noisia for drum ‘n’ bass and Adam Beyer for techno (even if his brand of techno has expanded beyond the often narrow definitions of the genre).
Check out the full rankings below:
House: KiNK
Progressive House: Eric Prydz
Deep House: Solomun
Tech House: Hot Since 82
Electro House: Diplo
Future House: Don Diablo
Techno: Adam Beyer
Trance: Armin van Buuren
Drum ‘n’ Bass: Noisia
Big Room: Hardwell
Indie Dance: Todd Terje

Daft Punk Just Earned Their First #1 Song Ever
After more than two decades in the music industry, Daft Punk have finally earned their first number one single with the Weeknd’s “Starboy.” The duo co-produced and co-wrote the track. “Starboy” defeated Rae Sremmurd’s viral hit “Black Beatles,” which sat at number one for six weeks.
They came close to achieving their first number one more than three years ago with the release of the inescapable “Get Lucky,” (which featured Pharrell on vocals), but that track only peaked at number two on the charts.

Flosstradamus’s Josh Young Leaves Duo to Focus on Side-Project
The New Year signals new beginnings, and 2017 is shaping up to be a new era for Chicago’s own Flosstradamus, which earlier this week went from duo to one-man show with the announcement that member Josh Young is leaving to pursue his Me2 side-project full-time.
The announcement came from Young himself this past Tuesday (December 20) via an Instagram video. In it, he says he actually decided on going solo at the end of this past summer, but wasn’t able to publicize it until after Flosstradamus’s latest tour wrapped. “I have so much love and respect for [former production partner] Curt and the whole Floss management and crew… and most of all, HDYNation,” he says, adding that new music is imminent come the new year.
The festival-trap favorites have been working their way up the ladder for over a decade, hitting the big time with their raucous remix of Major Lazer’s 2011 single, “Original Don.” They released EPs on Fool’s Gold, Mad Decent, and Ultra Records; and collaborated with artists including Iggy Azalea, Juicy J, Travis Porter, Waka Flocka Flame, Lil Jon, and Post Malone. Earlier this year, they launched a record label, Hi Def Youth.
Questions as to whether or not Flosstradamus would continue post-split were answered later that day by its remaining member, Curt Cameruci, who wrote on Facebook, “The reports of Flosstradamus’s death have been greatly exaggerated. A movement does not stop when one of its founding fathers goes abroad—it only gets bigger! Flosstradamus will continue and I am excited to carry the torch. Josh will always be a part of the #HDYNATION and we wish him the best on his future endeavors.”

Indonesian Meme, ‘Om Telolet Om’ Here’s What It Means
The dance music world became immediately inundated with a bizarre new meme, “Om Telolet Om.” The almost-palindromic phrase, which translates roughly to “Sir, honk your horn, sir” in Indonesian, flabbergasted as many DJs as it attracted. Nonetheless, numerous big-name producers hopped onto the viral opportunity with greater enthusiasm than the mannequin challenge. Within a day of the meme’s inception, the Asian onomatopoeia spurred “remixes” from acts like Ummet Ozcan and Firebeats:
While not everyone in the dance music industry put effort toward producing music surrounding the meme in its infancy, the phrase has been at the tip of every DJs thumbs as varied stars have tweeted in coy knowledge of the meme’s existence, bewilderment at its meaning, or to help others in figuring out its origin.
Last night, Billboard Dance took it upon themselves to uncover the arcane truths behind “Om Telolet Om.” After reaching out to an beguilingly oblivious Zedd for comment, the outlet reported the following information:
“It appears the phrase refers to the onomatopoeia of Indonesian city buses. According to the Jakarta Post, the phenomenon began in November with a Facebook video that showed children shouting and waving signs with the phrase (which literally means “sir, honk your horn, sir”) at passing city buses in Jepara, Central Java, then erupting in gleeful cheers when a driver accedes to their request. The video has garnered 1.8 million views and more than 45,000 shares since, inspiring others to imitate the feat across the region.”
Billboard Dance remarked on the severe viral nature of the meme in India, which has reportedly caused traffic jams in the capital city of Jakarta, and noted that the meme appeared to catch wind following legions of Indonesian kids spamming DJs’ social media accounts with the meme.

Chris Brown, Lil Wayne Implicated In Massive ‘Sizzurp’ Drug Operation
Both Chris Brown and Lil Wayne are potentially tied into a complicated pharmaceutical drug operation, according to arrest details now surfacing. The dirty connection involves Miami music producer Harrison Garcia, aka ‘Cuban Harry,’ known to hang out with both Brown and Lil Wayne.
The end product of Cuban’s operation has largely been ‘sizzurp’ and other ‘purple drank’ variations, a staple in the rap scene.
Cuban Harry has now been arrested and detained in Miami on multiple felony charges. Those charges include racketeering, grand theft and trafficking in illegal drugs.
Garcia faces multiple felonies tied to a string of robberies involving local pharmacies, according to arrest warrants and court documents. More than a dozen robberies involving pharmacies like Walgreens in the Miami area have been identified. In all of those break-ins, Garcia is being charged with orchestrating the heists, then using the stolen prescriptions to concoct and distribute opioid-powered cocktails.
The operation is all about taking legal prescriptions of drugs like codeine and pushing them into the black market. That black market results in heroine-like ‘sizzurp’ reportedly enjoyed by superstars like Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, and even Justin Bieber. “Garcia has organized, facilitated, finances and directed co-conspirators to commit burglaries… in order to obtain stolen narcotics for re-sale,” Sgt. Shane Schroeder of the Broward Sheriff’s Office explained.

Times have absolutely changed over the years. And as this video shows, the technology needed to pull off a solid scratch set is not what it used to be. Please close your eyes and imagine Fong Fong doing this set on a pair of turntables and mixer — not far off really is it? And that’s all courtesy of algoriddim djay, the Reloop Mixtour, and a heap of skills.

What Song Is This? Snapchat Has the Answer
Snapchat can now identify any song playing in your surrounding. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
Identifying songs playing at clubs, bars, or parties used to be a pain. Now, it’s becoming almost impossible NOT to answer the question, ‘what song is this?’ Unless you’re listening to a song on a remote island without any mobile connection (unlikely), chances are you can figure it out.
Enter Snapchat, which just inked an amazing deal with Shazam. Shazam is probably the biggest app for identifying songs. Now, it’s embedded into Snapchat.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Update to the latest version of Snapchat.
2. Open the app.
3. Hold down on the camera screen within Snapchat to prompt Shazam to identify music playing in the background.
4. A pop-up box will appear with more info, including the artist, title, lyrics, audio preview, and YouTube clip.
5. Remember the track details, as they will disappear.
6. Share if you want!
7. Repeat when you hear a new song playing that you don’t know.

DJ mixes are now legal on SoundCloud according to founder
In a recent interview with the German music publication Groove Magazine, Eric Wahlforss, founder and technical manager of SoundCloud, announced a piece of very great news for DJs who want to upload DJ mixes to the site: anyone can now post DJ mixes featuring other artists’ copyrighted tracks without obtaining the rights beforehand.
“During the negotiations for SoundCloud Go, we achieved agreement with collecting societies like GEMA in Germany, making these problems a thing of the past – even for users who do not subscribe. This means that DJ mixes are now legal and problem-free on SoundCloud. So this is a very positive news for DJs.”
The popular streaming site recently implemented SoundCloud GO, a new paid subscription service created in order to compete with the likes of Spotify and Apple Music. Prior to this feature going live, the negotiations between SoundCloud and large record companies had not gone over all that well, resulting in the labels, as owners of a large chunk of content on the site, forcing SoundCloud to remove all DJ mixes and remixes that did not have the appropriate rights.
The road has been rocky for the young company, as they had to deal with multiple controversial decisions such as the one described above that ultimately forced the take-down of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of tracks. Thus, this news comes as a relief not only for the company itself, but for the multitudes of producers and DJs, large and small, who prefer SoundCloud over other streaming services.

Kanye West Released from Hospital, Reportedly Not Living with Kim Kardashian
A source confirmed to Billboard that West had left the hospital where he had been cared for for over a week. The rapper entered the hospital on Nov. 21 after he cancelled the last dates of his Saint Pablo Tour, and was treated for exhaustion and sleep deprivation.
Before West was hospitalized, he went on a concert rant where the rapper claimed he would have voted for Donald Trump. The speech lasted a full 40 minutes, and fan shot videos and tweets reported that West was praising the nature of Trump’s campaign, not Trump himself.
“Kanye isn’t at home with Kim and the kids,” the source said. “He is instead receiving outpatient care elsewhere with a medical team. Kim still seems concerned but is supportive.”
Page Six reports that family sources believe the cause of the meltdown was that West had been taking his medications erratically. TMZ further asserts that he was taking them incorrectly due to stress following Kardashian’s widely publicized armed robbery in Paris.
Executive producer of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Ryan Seacrest, said that filming on the show is not halted for the 13th season, saying, “I’ve spoken to Kim. I’ve not spoken to Kanye, but I think that things are going better now.”
