Pioneer DJM-S9 Review by Digital Dave
Never before has a DJ mixer taken the DJ sector of the social media world by storm the way the new Pioneer DJM-S9 has. The S9 came on strong getting major love from DJs young and old, however Pioneer’s latest mixer in its club standard DJM series has also received backlash from some in the DJ community commonly in the form of memes. Much of this backlash while commonly mistaken for hate toward the S9 is actually directed at the DJs buying the S9. One such meme showing the S9 said “buys a mew mixer, does the same old scratches.” While there is a subset of the DJ community constantly pining for the newest toy on the market the S9 is more than just a flash in the pan as it has been embraced by many of the biggest names in the game from QBert to Eskie83 to the magnificent Jazzy Jeff himself.
But one of the biggest tells that the S9 is a true game changer are DJs like former Red Bull U.S. Thre3style finalist DJ Ku. Not only has Ku been a Rane 57 user since it’s inception, he also disliked both the Rane 62 as well as Serato DJ, but one afternoon with the S9 was enough to make him throw his disdain for SDJ out the window. I hear stories like his every day, including my own. I was never a fan of Serato DJ when compared to SSL and did not start using it until purchasing my S9.
So you may ask yourself what is all the hype about? After all Pioneer didn’t exactly break any boundaries with this mixer. There are already mixers out there with hot cue touch pads, on board effects, built in software and smooth faders. So where did Pioneer go so right. It’s simple, they did it all better than it’s ever been done before.
Let’s start with the faders. The S9 features a Magvel Fader Pro. It is the butteriest (yes that is a word) crossfader I’ve ever experienced. And for those haters out there who don’t like butter there is a “feeling adjust” that allows you to adjust the resistance and tighten the fader. The up faders are smooth as silk too but they aren’t loose at all. Many smooth faders I’ve felt in the past that are so loose that they keep going after you let them go, sometimes even to the point of bouncing back. I’ve had that experience with the Rane TTM-56, but not with the S9. The fader stops exactly where you let it go. The up faders and cross fader all have adjustable curves as well. The curves and feeling adjust dials are all on the front of the mixer. Continue reading →

Peter Rosenberg: “If You Don’t Have Turntables You’re Not a DJ”
Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that Peter Rosenberg has strong opinions and, no surprise, some of his strongest opinions revolve around DJs. In a continuation of our previous interview with the NYC radio personality, Rosenberg shared with us that he doesn’t consider someone a DJ unless they’re spinning on turntables. At a time when just about everyone is making appearances on weekend DJ jaunts, the debate over what one considers a DJ has been raging for some time.
The EDM wave brought with it a slew of new innovations and digitized maneuverability that crested with the Swedish House Mafia incident of 2012 when Steve Angello was videotaped casually walking around behind the boards, smoking a cigarette and occasionally hitting a button or two. Simply put, it’s gotten too easy, and Peter’s not impressed. Read more at: https://tr.im/iqmQI
Speaking on the basic differences between DJ’ing with turntables and vinyl vs. using a playlist on a Macbook, Rosenberg mentions how people often are able to have conversations while they mix songs, whereas he is fully tuned in when blending the sounds of vinyl over one another because it’s a skill that requires real attention. While some may take it as old-headedness on the Hot97 personality’s behalf, it bears a lot of truth. As things get easier due to technology we have to start realizing that easier doesn’t always equate to better, as anyone who has seen both an average DJ set juxtaposed against the four turntable whirlwind that is an RJD2 performance.
Go ahead, play some great music to an adoring crowd, but save the “DJ” title for the actual DJs. The whole thing actually reminds me of some tweets I recently saw from writer turned party-starter Ernest Baker who was talking up his use of Spotify the night before he went to “DJ” a party. Maybe that’s the future, but if so it seems like one I’d rather not RSVP for. Read more at: https://tr.im/iqmQI

Watch Calvin Harris & Disciples Perform “How Deep Is Your Love” On ‘The Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon
Watch Calvin Harris & Disciples Perform “How Deep Is Your Love” On ‘The Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon
Of all the career milestones Calvin Harris has swept up throughout his tenure as a superstar DJ and producer—crossover hits, a Grammy, a Vegas residency, an Armani modeling gig, a biography written on him, and the title of 2015’s highest-paid DJ among them—it’s weird that he has yet to appear on US television.
Following his dance-pop comrades, Disclosure, onto the late-night circuit, the Scot made his proper debut this past weekend (Friday, December 11) on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. There, he performed his latest single, “How Deep Is Your Love” with help from UK trio Disciples and vocalist Ina Wroldsen.
“I promise you lasers!” exclaimed Fallon at the top of the performance. Sure enough, Harris and the Disciples crew stood behind a wall of blue and white lasers while Wroldsen took center stage. (Harris lingering in the background on keys is certainly a change-up from his DJ persona.) It’s the first time the track has ever been performed live.
“Last night was a real spacial [sic] moment and one for the history books,” commented Disciples, who also made their television debut alongside Harris.

David Guetta Is Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Artist Of 2015
Looking back at this year’s top performers, most people would expect the number one electronic artist to be whoever they like the most or thought had the most successful year; for many people, David Guetta would not be the first producer to come to mind. However, Billboard would argue otherwise.
Earning the Top Dance/Electronic Artist of the Year title, Guetta has shown that he deserves this honor for various reasons. His track “Hey Mama” with Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha and Afrojack spent an incredible 11 weeks at the top of the Hot Dance/ Electronic Songs chart, and finished at number three for the end of the year. The song also claimed the title of number one Dance/ Electronic Digital Singles. Moreover, the seasoned Frenchman has produced an additional 10 songs that made it onto the aforementioned hot chart, as well as having his album Listen named as the Top Dance/ Electronic Album.
As it is clear to see, Guetta had an incredibly successful career this year. However, that is not to say that he was the only artist to produce major hits in 2015. Three of Calvin Harris‘ singles—”Outside” feat. Ellie Goulding, “Blame” feat. John Newman, and “How Deep Is Your Love” feat. Disciples—appeared on the year-end Hot Dance/Electronic Songs top 10, making him the only artist to achieve this accomplishment.
Other artists to score number one honors include Major Lazer, DJ Snake, Robin Schulz, and Axwell & Ingrosso. For a full comprehensive list on all the 2015 rankings, check out Billboard’s original article.

The Weeknd Hit With Copyright Lawsuit Over ‘The Hills’
A British music publishing company claims that the Weeknd’s hit song “The Hills” infringes on the copyright to composer Tom Raybould’s track “Revolution” from the soundtrack to the movie “The Machine.” The movie was released in 2014.
In a lawsuit filed on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, publisher Cutting Edge Music Services contends that producer Million Dollar Mano sent Raybould a direct message on March 9, 2015, stating, “I sampled your music might make it 2 the weeknd next album. Huge fan of what u did 4 the machine movie!” Mano, aka Emmanuel Nickerson, is also a defendant in the lawsuit, along with another producer, Illangelo, aka Carlo Montagnese.
Cutting Edge contends that “The Hills” contains substantial similarity to “original and unique portions” of the “Revolution” track. “Specifically, both the Infringing Song and the Track featuring synthesizer bass-lines performed with almost identical idiosyncratic sounds at the same register and using the same pitch sequence, melodic phase structure and rhythmic durations,” the lawsuit states. The lawsuit points out that the song “The Hills” received first week digital sales of 109,000 copies and 5.2 million domestic streams, and debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The album on which it is featured, “Beauty Behind the Madness,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with sales of about 326,000 in the first week, the lawsuit states. It seeks unspecified damages as well as an injunction barring further distribution of the song and album until Cutting Edge Music is given proper credit. It also calls for the current versions of the song and album to be removed from distribution.
“The lawsuit speaks for itself, and I appreciate my publisher the Cutting Edge Group standing up for composers in situations like the one I’m in,” Raybould said in a statement.
Also named as defendants are Belly, aka Ahmad Balshe, who helped compose the song and album; the Weeknd’s label XO; the labels Universal Music Group and Republic Records; publishers Warner/Chappell Music, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Songs Music Publishing, WB Music Corp., Connoisseur of Connoisseurs; CP Music Corp.; Songs of SMP; Songs Hear the Art; and Sony/ATV Ballad.Cutting Edge is represented by Tom Brackey, managing partner of the Los Angeles firm of Freund & Brackey.
A spokesman for Universal Music Group did not immediately return a request for comment.

The ‘Star Wars’ Score And The Notorious B.I.G. Collide In Possibly The Greatest Remix Album Ever
The Notorious B.I.G.‘s Life After Death is one of the greatest rap albums of all-time, and it’s likely that when the asteroid that wipes out our civilization finally hits, it’ll be remembered by future generations as a landmark in American music. Likewise, the first Star Wars film will always be remembered as one of the most grandiose, imaginative ventures in cinema. What do you get when you combine the two entities? Possibly one of the greatest remix albums of all-time, right up there with Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album.
Richie Branson is a rapper and Star Wars aficionado, so it’s only natural that he teamed up with producer Solar Slim for Life After Death Star, which sees the duo (dubbed Otaku Gang) pairing up Big’s raps (there are also raps off of other Big albums, including “Dead Wrong”) with John Williams’ legendary score for Star Wars: A New Hope. The result is a mix of dark, big band bravado backing the boisterous syllables of Biggie Smalls. Some of the standout tracks include the remix to “Ten Crack Commandments” and “Long Kiss Goodnight.” Really, just about every single crisp track revives the late Brooklyn juggernaut and makes him sound just as potent today as he’s ever been. Take a listen below — the entire project is streaming on SoundCloud.
